Liz Yelling Camp continued
On Wednesday after a 8am Breakfast we drove to Plateau des Glieres, a fascinating, beautiful, plateau which was the centre of the French resistance; from 31st January to 26th March 1944; less than 500 French Resistance fighters defended the plateau hemmed in by snow and the Vichy reinforcements. They left just before 7,000 men of the German 157th Division launched an assault, 149 of them were shot, executed or died whilst being deported. On 1st August more than 3000 members of the resistance gathered on the plateau to receive a huge Allied parachute drop which, on 19th August 1944, helped the maquis to liberate the departement before the Allies arrived. A National Monument to the Resistance was built in 1973 at the initiative of the Survivors of Glieres, there is a History Trail, in the middle of the plateau which traces the daily life of the battalion and the way that it was organised during the Winter of 1944.
